Karen KayLove Pedrosa: Graffiti and Miniature Trains
We have so many things to look forward to! Our anniversary is revved up to be another amazing birthday. Today, we introduce you to one of the many wonderful entertainers whose live artistry will be featured before we cut the cake, KayLove. Karen KayLove Pedrosa is an Advisory Board Member and a "Bronx born and based, first generation Puerto Rican artist who draws her inspiration from the vibrant, gritty, soulful streets of New York City, the lush campos of Puerto Rico and all the places in between." Her medium of choice is graffiti, "A child of the 80's, she was inspired by the museums that the trains provided, the roof tops murals, tags and colors that brightened up a once dirty and dingy Bronx." At our birthday party, she will be bombing* the tags** of supporters that purchase the experience, on the side of miniature trains.
Supporters will have a unique, KayLove piece and contribute to our fundraising goal for the evening.
Contributions collected this night will directly fund our 2017 free programs such as Nesting the Arts Project, among many others! Purchase your tickets to our anniversary party today and help us celebrate.

Why does anyone leave their house these days anyways? We can bring liquor or beer home; have our groceries or pre-made meals delivered; clothing and electronics sitting at our door steps in twenty four hours. Sports can be simulated on screens and our artistic itches scratched on snap chat. It’s more than easy to lose yourself in the way Netflix lives are destroyed by fate and intrigue; it is a miracle anyone moves a foot outside of their door steps.
I don’t know why I think of these things at bars, but I do. I sank into the white leather couch at Port Morris Distillery and watched strangers float from table to table and wondered what brought them out of their Sunday afternoon.
Each table was equipped with a different activity. At the front of the PMD lounge area, were tables covered in magazines, glitter, paper drawing tiles, plastic tubes, paint, canvas; all meant to tease something out of the brain. Toward the stage area, were chairs neatly arranged for artists to find inspiration in the moments of live models, which included Melanie Gonzalez and Tyler PSwitch Dow.
The coldness of the clay I cut out of the plastic packages made me wonder why anyone left their home in this heat. Slowly, people moved out of the bar section, checked in with Yolanda Rodriguez and grabbed their activity guidelines for the afternoon. Each person was given a list of the learning stations they would be interacting with and the gentle suggestion they should complete as many as possible.
At Elizabeth Ortiz’s table they experimented with miniature painting, using small canvases donated to us by Artist & Craftman Supply, Bronx store. With Jordan Laks & Twahira Kahn, participants used found materials such as magazine cut-outs to create new things like, refrigerator magnets. In the background, Laura Alvarez kept time. “Six minutes left on the pose,” she’d remind the artists sketching out forms.
At my table we talked about being hung over, and how the clay felt good on the skin, and how it just felt good to be out the house, making something. I think they were a couple, both in business. He was heading to Thailand and she had returned to school. They didn’t know what exactly what to do with the clay, so I asked them to mold something inspired them. They both made sunflowers, their own kind of sunflower.
Maybe, it had been the image of Sunflower painting donated to us at the last paint event sitting on the raffle table that still lived in some quite space in them, or maybe it was coincidence.
You are invited! Only a few days left to have a blast with us during our 2nd Annual Art at the Bar Networking Event and Fundraiser! Join us next Sunday, July 17th to chill, make art, laugh, and enjoy some refreshing drinks and some pitorro at Port Morris Distillery!
There will be something to for everyone; you do not need to be an artists to attend. We will have two models for artists to draw, mini canvases painting station, magnet making station, coloring station, games, food and music! $10 (online) or $12 at the door! Buy your tickets NOW!
Funds collected during this event will directly benefit our 2017 Free Art Workshop Series! So far, in 2016, your continuous support has helped us bring FREE programming to more than 300 people. Help us continue. Support our Fundraising efforts, share, join us!

LAN Project (Local Area Network) is a collaborative art production created by Melanie Gonzalez & Tyler PSwitch Dow. Launching in June 2016 with an art exhibition and closing with a music festival, the LAN creators are bringing multimedia art from the walls of the internet to their hometown in The Bronx, NY.
The LAN Project Exhibition showcases the works of 8 millennial artists (including the two curators) of diverse backgrounds: digital media, photography, sculpture, painting & live performance. This exhibition features artists from different neighborhoods, art scenes & industries celebrating the experience of constantly undergoing rapid change. The opening featured a live performance of Frac/King KOO, a live action mixtape from Tyler PSwitch Dow.
The LAN MIND FEST is the musical extension of the project, presenting art that cannot be contained to a canvas or sculpture setting. This closing festival features a comedy set and music performances by artists from a multitude of genres.
The closing festival will be held at the Bronx Music Heritage Center on Saturday, June 25th , 2016 from 2pm-7pm. Suggested entry donation is $5. This exhibition was made in partnership with BxArts Factory, BMHCLab & WHEDco.
